🙏Thank you for inviting me to yesterday’s event titled “Which Price Has Peace?” hosted by the Chancellor-Helmut-Schmidt-Foundation and the Chancellor-Helmut-Kohl-Foundation. I was privileged to attend the discussion between Dr. Wolfgang Schäuble, a long-serving member and former President of the German Bundestag, and 4-star General Carsten Breuer, the current head of the German Bundeswehr.

💡Almost 40 years ago, on November 22, 1983, the German Bundestag ratified the „NATO-Doppelbeschluss“, paving the way for the installation of American Pershing II nuclear missiles on German soil. This strategic and very much discussed move, aimed at countering nuclear threats from Russia, escalated tensions, marking a significant era in the Cold War. Historically, this „NATO-Doppelbeschluss“ can be seen as the beginning of the end for the Soviet Union.

👉Drawing parallels to the present, it underscores our obligation to defend our democratic principles. Building strong military defense capabilities is essential to deter any attempts that might undermine our collective vision of living in freedom.
